Try This 3-Step DIY Fix Before You Call Us
If your disposal is humming but not spinning, or is completely dead, try this quick troubleshooting guide before picking up the phone Safety First: NEVER put your hand inside the disposal!:
- Press the Reset Button: Look underneath the sink at the bottom of the disposal unit. Push the small red reset button. If it popped out, pushing it back in might instantly restore power.
- Manually Unjam the Flywheel: If the unit is humming, it is jammed. Turn off the wall switch. Insert a 1/4-inch Allen wrench (hex key) into the small hole at the very bottom center of the unit. Crank it back and forth to manually break up the jam.
- Check the Breaker: If the unit makes zero noise and the reset button didn’t work, check your home’s main electrical panel to see if the kitchen circuit breaker has tripped.
Still not working? It’s time to call the professionals at Jerry’s Plumbing.
Our licensed plumbers service and install all major brands of garbage disposals, including InSinkErator (Badger series), Moen, and Waste King. We handle both continuous-feed and batch-feed models.
If you need a replacement, we don’t just grab the cheapest unit. We will advise you on the right size and horsepower (e.g., 1/2 HP vs. 1 HP) for your household’s actual cooking habits, so you don’t end up with an underpowered unit that jams constantly on vegetable peels.
If the DIY tricks didn’t work, you likely have a mechanical or plumbing failure. Call us if you notice:
- Won’t Turn On at All: If pressing the reset button doesn’t help, you may have a wiring issue, a failed motor, or a tripped circuit breaker.
- Humming But Not Spinning: A humming disposal that doesn’t grind is usually jammed, forcing it can burn out the motor.
- Frequent Jams: Repeated jamming often means the unit is undersized for your usage or nearing the end of its lifespan.
- Persistent Foul Odors: Foul smells that don’t clear with cleaning can indicate food trapped in crevices or a cracked grinding chamber.
- Leaking Under the Sink: Leaks at the sink flange, dishwasher connection, or discharge pipe all require professional repair.
- Slow Draining: If water backs up when running the disposal, you may have a partial clog or a drain line issue connected to the unit.
Garbage disposals sit at the tricky intersection of plumbing and electrical work. Replacing a unit requires safely wiring high-voltage connections (whether hardwired or installing a new pigtail plug) and ensuring water-tight seals on the drain assembly and P-trap. Incorrect wiring creates a shock hazard, and improper plumbing connections lead to hidden leaks that cause black mold and destroy your kitchen cabinets. Jerry’s technicians handle both sides of the job safely and correctly to code.
What should you NEVER put down a garbage disposal?
To prevent jams and severe drain clogs, never put the following items down your disposal: liquid grease or cooking oil (it solidifies in the pipes), fibrous vegetables (like celery, asparagus, or corn husks), coffee grounds, eggshells, and starchy foods like pasta or rice, which swell with water and create paste.
How long do garbage disposals last?
A high-quality garbage disposal typically lasts between 8 and 12 years. If your unit is over a decade old and requires frequent unjamming or develops a leak through the bottom of the casing, it is more cost-effective to replace it than repair it.
A jammed disposal is often accompanied by a stubborn drain clog. If your sink is completely backed up, we can help:
